"Funeral for the Honey Bee" by Jess X Chen
Scratchboard with Digital Color | 14”x19”
I did this drawing for a currently unpublished poem of mine excavating the last words of a colony of honey bees suffering from colony collapse disorder. Did you know all the worker honey bees are women? At the end of a honey bee’s life, it’s funeral attendants are the flowers that she pollinated. You can find out more about resisting the disappearance of bees in this Ted Talk by bee researcher, Marla Spivak. I hope to use this piece and the poem that accompanies in collaboration with ecologists to encourage people to help plan more bee-friendly wildflowers. Let me know if you have any ideas where to start!
Additionally, a limited edition of large screen prints of this are available at the LoveHoldLetGo store.
